Kung fu classes are structured to give you an excellent body workout, while teaching self-defense, having fun, and meeting new friends. Kung fu literally translates as “skill” or “craft”. Through the training process, you will develop skill in the body and mind. We have separate classes for adults and children (8-12).

My name is Liam Cochran and I am the head instructor of the Carlisle Kung fu Center since opening the center in 2001. My students call me Shifu, which means teacher. I have been training martial arts since 1992 when I was 14 years old. I have training in Bai Long Kung fu (which is what I mainly specialize in), Tai Chi, Modern Arnis and some Brazilian Jiujitsu. Over the years at the Carlisle Kung Fu Center, I have instructed countless students. And over that time, I have realized my passion for teaching. I think you will see this if you try one of my classes. I really feel lucky to teach and train with such a fantastic group of people at the Carlisle Kung Fu Center.
At the Carlisle Kung Fu Center we practice a short fist southern Chinese Martial art called Xin Pai Bai Long Quan Fa, literally meaning the New school of White Dragon boxing method. Our style is very well rounded and includes aspects of kicking, sweeping, punching, blocking, ground fighting and joint locking techniques. At the Carlisle Kung Fu Center we provides the means for development as a complete martial arts practitioner.
Animal movements and attitude form a foundation for individual techniques. The movements of different animals, including tiger, leopard, snake, crane, and dragon, are taught so that the student can learn to mimic characteristics of each animal’s fighting prowess and understand the fighting attitude embodied by these powerful animals.
At the Carlisle Kung Fu Center, martial arts classes emphasize learning footwork, stances, punches, kicks, blocks, and reactionary ability. Breathing exercises(chi-gong) and forms(kata) training are also an important part of the curriculum at the Carlisle Kung Fu Center. Breathing exercises are taught so that students develop proper breathing, internal awareness, and strengthen the body internally. Forms training is a prearranged sequences of movements devised to teach theories of combat(offense and defense). Many of our forms imitate animal movements. Forms contain the fighting theories and basic concepts that are the foundation of Chinese Martial Arts.
Weapons are an important component in martial arts training. We practice several traditional Chinese weapons including: Chinese broadsword, staff, nunchaku, and kwan dao. Knife and gun self defense is also integrated into our curriculum.

My five years at the Carlisle Kung-Fu Center have brought me a stronger body, a quieter mind, more confidence in myself than I would have thought possible, and teachers and friends who have become like family. It truly is a wonderful place! Many thanks to everyone who has made it possible, especially Shifu Liam Cochran!

Kung Fu has helped me stop smoking, opened my mind to things that I never thought I could do, and allows me to learn along side my son, which to me, is priceless. Friendly instructors and students make it a great atmosphere for family. I am thankful to be a part of it.
